Van Life vs RV Life

“Travel. As much as you can. As far as you can. As long as you can. Life’s not meant to be lived in one place.”

Ready to hit the road and don’t know where to start or which type of vehicle to choose? Camper vans are becoming known for being a much better travel alternative compared to RVs. Over the last 100 years or so, RVs have been considered the USA’s most popular long-term travel vehicle. That was until Vanlifers realized the benefits of vans and changed the game. Campervans started to be the more preferred choice over the last 10-12 years, but they were also popular in the 60’s and 70’s after VW launched their vans in 1947. Nowadays, as vans can be customized, they have much better gas mileage, are way more durable, dependable, and easier to maneuver.  Because of all these benefits they are now considered to be one of the best ways to travel on the road.  RV’s definitely have their benefits, mainly being most of the comforts you would expect to have in a house, but if you’re willing to trade a small amount of comfort, you are able to gain a large amount of freedom that comes with a camper van.

Thankfully, more than ever before, Americans are becoming more aware of their carbon footprints. Vanlifers have found that due to the aerodynamics, weight and size, campervans are way more fuel efficient and cost effective over time. There is a huge difference in the fuel economy, as campervans run about 20-28mpg depending on the vehicle model and year, and RVs get you only 8-12mpg. So if you want to travel the world by road, and care about saving the planet along the way, choosing a van is the right direction to head in!

The van building process allows the interior to be made much more functional and convenient than an RV. They can be custom designed during their conversions, unlike most RV counterparts that come mass produced in a factory. They also have off grid capabilities, large water capacities, and better rough terrain maneuverability which allow it’s owners to have a broader selection of camping and travel options.  Many custom vans are now being designed to include showers too. For example, VanMakers build custom vans available for purchase, or if you already have a van and need help with a transformation, they also are known for renovating an already purchased van, customizing it to your personality and lifestyle.

Another benefit of choosing vanlife is that vans are great for multipurpose use and can be used all year long. For example, an RV has more of a cookie cutter floor plan design that is geared towards the masses, and from the outside, there’s no mistaking it is an RV.  It’s not custom towards your specific wants and needs. However, a campervan can fit into parking spaces wherever you go and have a stealthier design on the outside so no one would know if you are completely camping in a parking lot in the middle of the city. With an untrained eye, you probably wouldn’t be able to tell what it is. Therefore, you have many more options on where to go, what to do, and where you can park it
